Pierre Shale Formation
This amazing skeleton was found by a local resident, Gary Perry, while he was fixing a water damn with his bulldozer. He noticed part of the vertebral column sticking out of the hill and collected it to show his grandson, Eric Hartse. Eric, a local MRF volunteer since he was 12, quickly noted the importance of the specimen and contacted MRF. MRF teamed up with Dr. John Hoganson and the North Dakota Heritage Center to collect this largely complete Mosasaur specimen. Over eighty vertebrae and the hind paddles were collected. Unfortunately, the front of the animal was sticking out of the hill and the skull and part of the front flippers had eroded away. Regardless the specimen is very complete and plans are underway to prepare the specimen for display in the future museum.
